Our Story

A history in the hills.

Four generations between a colonial farmhouse and a family lodge.

History

From a 1930s farmhouse, to a quiet retreat.

Nestled in the lush landscapes of the Usambara Mountains in Tanga, Tanzania, Mullers Mountain Lodge is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. This enchanting farmhouse, dating back to the early 1930s, carries the grandeur of German colonial revival. A house built with burned brick and wooden interiors.

Its story begins with Wilhelm Muller and Luizer Marie Muller, a couple who made their life together in the Usambara Mountains. They were blessed with a son, Karl Rudolf Muller, the founder of Mullers Mountain Lodge, who later married Christine Malongo Muller, and together they raised their four children. From humble beginnings as a private family, they transformed their home into a hospitality destination: a lodge with a character all its own.

It has been a home to many ever since, a family business maintaining the legacy left behind. Surrounded by the finest climate Lushoto has to offer, set 1,600 metres above sea level among the warm Sambaa community, it is a place where history, culture, and nature converge. A book of the full family history is being prepared.
